Quiet evening

I came across this pincushion pattern over at thepatchworkorange and had to make it.  I didn't follow the pattern exactly so mine isn't as nice but considering I threw it together while sitting around watching historical BBC mini series via netflix I think it turned out okay.

I would recommend using DK weight yarn instead of the worsted I used.  You will probably come out with one that is a little less chunky.

a few things to do in the New Year

Ride my bike more
Create a better garden
Spend more time with my camera
Eat better
Be creative
Exercise regularly
Pick up my pencils again
Give more
Go back home to visit

more to come..... what do you plan on doing in 2011?

One of my favorite things

Found the recipe online somewhere.  These were a hit on Christmas!

Cranberry White Chocolate bars

2 sticks melted and cooled butter
1 cup brown sugar
1/3 regular sugar
3 eggs

2 tsp vanilla

2 cups flour
1 1/2 tsp baking powder

3/4 cup craisins

3oz creamcheese
2 Tbs soft butter
3 cups powder sugar
1 tsp vanilla

Preheat oven to 350 and line a 10x13 pan with parchment paper.  Beat the butter and the sugars until light and fluffy.  Add eggs and vanilla slowly until combined.  Then add the flour and baking powder.  Once combined stir in the crasins and white chocolate.  Pour batter into pan and bake for 20mins.

Combine frosting ingredients until light and fluffy and frost bars once they have cooled completely.  Garnish with extra craisins and chopped white chocolate.

This was my first time making these and they tasted pretty good.  I will probably tweet the recipe a little next time around.

It came and then it went

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas I know I did.  Now it is time to pack all the decorations back up and get ready for a new year.

I didn't take many photos but here are a few I managed to sneak in with my iphone

Sweet Corn Chowder

3/4 c butter
1 onion, chopped
1 clove garlic, minced
3/4 c flour
1 1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp fresh ground pepper
3 potatoes, cooked, peeled and cubed
1 lb bacon, cooked and crumbled
1 pkg frozen corn, thawed
4 1/2 c milk
1 c chicken broth
1 tsp parsley flakes
1 c cheddar cheese, grated
1/2 c sour cream

In a large saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Add onion and garlic; sweat until onion is clear. Whisk in flour, salt and pepper. Stir until smooth. Gradually add milk and broth while stirring. Add in potatoes, bacon, corn and parsley flakes. Continue to heat over medium heat, stirring frequently until chowder has thickened, about 20 minutes. Remove from heat. Whisk in grated cheese and sour cream, stir until cheese has melted.

* I added some additional salt throughout the cooking process.  I also threw in some jumbo lump crab meat at the end so I guess this is actually crab and sweet corn chowder.  Bread bowls would have been a nice touch but I couldn't find any last minute so a few thick slices of italian bread accompanied this meal.

Secret Santa

Rachel and I were lucky enough to draw each other's names in the secret santa swap at work.  I think most people think we rigged it somehow but it was completely random.  I had the most fun shopping for her.  She is extremely girly and likes anything that sparkles or vintage.  We have the best conversations that revolve around bodily functions, fashion, and embarrassing moments.

For her gift I made her a light grey scarf, found the cutest cupcake dish sponge holder, a glitter encrusted frame and a pink "R" for her office.  Last but not least the most perfect betsy johnson sequin clutch/purse for her.  As soon as I saw it I knew it was the "one".  Merry Christmas Rach, you're probably one of the sweetest people on the planet!

Christmas apologies

I always forget how busy things get during the holidays.  Things always seem to fall behind, especially all things internet.  Which includes blogging, emails, blog surfing, etc... I am in serious need of some catch up time.

I've been finding Marley on the couch using my Christmas pillows, she technically isn't suppose to be on this part of the couch.  Don't feel sorry for her she has her very own section but I always find her here.  I would scold her but she is just too darn cute so I just take pictures instead and tell her papa how naughty she is.

The great cookie fail

Last weekend I decided to make some christmas sugar cookies.  As you can see there is no photo of the final product.  That is because this dough was an utter fail.  I thought I would be different and try a unique sugar cookie dough recipe... not a good idea.  This dough had cream cheese in it which is what I think was my downfall.  I made a giant sticky doughy mess.  My search continues for the "perfect" sugar cookie recipe.

Pug Love?

There seems to be some debate in the house about my pug in a sweater.  The kid thinks it looks like a gorilla.

Thank you Friday for finally coming to an end.  This week has been brutal and the weekend can't come soon enough.  I would like to keep it as simple as possible with plenty of opportunities for naps.

Teriyaki chicken and rice.  It is the easiest meal to make and our families' back up plan when we want something quick or nobody wants to use extra brain power to pick what they want for dinner.  None of that nasty bottled sauce either.  I make my own special blend of soysauce, garlic, green onions, agave nectar.  Short grain rice is also a must... yes, I am a rice snob.

What are your family go to meals?

It's frosty outside

A chill has hit Tampabay and it is cold outside.  The always lovely Rachel is nice enough to model my scarf/cowls for me, isn't she photogenic?  If anyone is interested in one shoot me an email there is a special low price for blog readers :)
