Not your Grandma's quilting

I am falling in love with modern quilting.
If you would have asked me about quilting years ago I would have told you it wasn't my thing. I was young and dumb what can I say?
Modern quilting.... what a whole new world this is.  So many bright fun colors, modern prints, and geometric designs.  At times I don't even know where to begin but most recently I had the opportunity to learn a few things from Elizabeth, over at dontcallmebetsy.com  She is super sweet and has a great blog if you're even remotely interested in modern quilting.
This here is my sorta finished piece.  I messed up along the way and it is far from perfect but I am so happy with it.  I will probably turn it into a pillow but for now I just like to stare at it.
So stoked! Thank you so much Elizabeth for all your help.

You can find a Modern Quilt Guild to join in your area.

If you're in the Tampabay area come join in on our fun.

POW WOW quilting

My adventure in quilting has officially begun.  After hoarding the fabrics I had choose for weeks I finally took the big leap and started cutting.  Lucky for me I had some help Elizabeth from dontcallmebetsy was kind enough to give me some guidance and I managed to do pretty well.  I would love to say everything went smoothly after that but in fact it didn't.  I managed to cut up the fabric in the bottom right incorrectly.  Not once, twice, but in fact 3 times!  How is this even possible?!  I will have to go out and snag some more fabric soon because I destroyed the half yard I bought.
I still have so much to cut but I stopped after the disaster last night.  I think I might wait until I stock up on some supplies to continue.  I need more fabric obviously but I also need a larger mat and a new iron.
Never fear I am NOT giving up.  This entire process with all the bumps I have hit along the way has been enjoyable.  I really do love working with fabrics and all the details involved really help with my sanity after spending all day at work.

Oh DUH, if you're interested in the pattern I am working on you can find it HERE!  I wanted to choose a pattern that wasn't too girly since I will be giving this to my dad when it's complete.  I will also be using a grey fabric in the "white" space.  Can't wait to finish and show it off.

I pretty much eat the same thing for breakfast if I'm cooking for myself.  Those that follow me via instagram can vouch for that.  Here are my main ingredients, I use free range eggs and nitrate/antibiotic free bacon.
The bacon I get is thick sliced, I think one slice is equal to two of the regular commercial grade stuff.  It also renders a lot less fat when cooked.  I completely cook my bacon in a non-stick pan.
While the bacon is cooking I trim up my asparagus and separate my eggs.  I only do that because I do not like yolks, it isn't for any health reason.
When the bacon is done I remove them from the pan and add the asparagus on some green onions to the pan with the bacon fat.  Like I said before the bacon I use doesn't render much, I wouldn't suggest using all the fat that comes off of commercial bacon.  Oh and it's important to note I cook the asparagus in the middle of the pan with the green onions on the outside.  This will keep the green onions from over cooking and burning.
Add a little sea salt and some black pepper.
When the asparagus is done I remove them but leave the green onions.  I add some grape tomatoes and a sprinkle of garlic powder.  I only cook them in the pan for a short time just enough to warm them through.
That's about it.
All there is left to do it eat.

Oh hai blog, long time no see

Welp the reality is the past few months have sucked and I really didn't want to blog.  Life keeps ticking on by even when you want it to just pause so you can catch your breath.
Yesterday I decided to get my craft room sorted.  It's been a complete mess and in an attempt to bring a small amount of order into the chaos I'm reorganizing the house.
First off the crazy craft room.
I have been looking for a credenza to put behind the couch in here for some extra storage space with no luck so I decided to just go with  a dresser.  It has the extra flat space I need in here plus the storage underneath.  win-win!
I'm still in the process of folding all the fabric I have so they fit nicely inside the drawers.  At this point I am just focusing on the folding.  Once that is done I will sort the fabrics and put them together by colors.
And last but not least I have been inspired by all the wonderful quilting creations amanda makes and decided to give it  go.  This here is my very first quilt block (I think that is what it is called but I could be totally wrong).  I have no idea what the pattern is but it's pretty popular so I'm sure you could find out via google.  I was really surprised by how large it turned out... I really should not have been since I measured all the pieces while cutting and could have figured it out with some basic math skills.  It's really too big to be anything on its own but I am going to quilt it and practice binding.

I have been having the worst time posting this morning. Blogger has been acting up on me and even as I type this I have no idea if it will even publish correctly.
Summer has started off with a bang around here. I wish I felt as cheery as these bears but I don't.
I'm sick, I'm tired, there are some huge life changes happening and everything is breaking.
I don't know how much more can really go wrong.

Vintage Singers

A little while back I went to the Flea Market with Becky and Eli.  I'm a super blog slacker but you can see Becky's post about it here.  It was very interesting... I'm not a huge thrift/yard sale/flea market kind of gal but it was a lot of fun and I scored this GEM.  1913 Vintage Singer Sewing machine for an amazing price. I only know the age because I looked up the serial number.  The machine is just gorgeous, when they say things like "they don't make them like they use to" THIS is what they are referring to.
I finally sat in front of YouTube today and figured out how to thread the machine.  Surprisingly it was so simple, maybe not a surprise when you really think about it though.  It seems to work just fine but really needs a good cleaning and some serious oil.  I am going to take it in somewhere to have it professionally serviced.  Then I can just keep up with just regular oiling and maintenance.

So a few weeks after out Flea market adventure, me being the non thrift/garage sale/flea marketer went on another adventure to a place out in St.Pete, FL and I found this.  I quickly took this pic and text Becky to see if she wanted it.  For $30 she said "go get it!"

Now it sits nicely displayed on her bookshelf.  Her machine was recently serviced and seemed to work when I tested it out prior to the purchase.

I think I am now obsessed and want another one.  I haven't been out since but I have a feeling the next time I do I will probably come across one and it will secretly be coming home with me.
This is how a hoarder's mind thinks....we are approaching dangerous grounds here :)

Anything new been happening with anyone?  I really need to catch up on blogs and start posting more often.

Is it spring

Because the cleaning continues...
I threw away so much stuff while cleaning this weekend.  I swear I have whatever it is that is the opposite of hoarding.  I just love getting rid of stuff.

The temps actually dropped here in Florida over the weekend, love it.
I also celebrated a birthday.  Becky threw me the more perfect party, it was super colorful and fun.  More details can be found here... Isn't she the best?  I'm very lucky to have her as a friend.

How was your weekend?  Did you go on any fun adventures?
I still have a lot of catching up to do, so many things to make, lots of mail that needs to be sent out.
I swear I'll be caught up soon.

Complete Chaos

Here I am…still here
Lately I feel like things are too chaotic in my life.  Too much stuff, too many things going on at once, not enough time to enjoy myself.  It is part of the reason I haven’t blogged on here for so long.  It didn’t feel like it was something I wanted to do, more like something I needed to do.  I already have a job, I don’t need another.

So I’ve decided to try and get myself back to where I want to be.

My craft room was driving me insane.  There wasn't enough room to do anything and I couldn't get comfortable in there and didn't feel creative. (sorry for the dark photo)

I got a new desk for my birthday and decided to do some organizing because I was craving some white space.  It's still a work in progress but I no longer have an anxiety attack when I walk into the room.

I also started writing things down in a planner and making some lists.
Any suggestions on ways to bring more order to your life?
I need all the help I can get!!

Some days

This morning started well enough but somehow it went to shit.

At this very moment I'm stressed and I really don't know why.  Every little thing is setting me off and without going into too much detail I can just say I'm about to lose it.

Anyone have any good stress busters?
